Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what people ask before booking. If yours is not here, just ask.
Can I book before arriving in Portugal?
Yes. The whole process works remotely: you pick a room, see it on a live WhatsApp video call, sign the written contract and pay the deposit by bank transfer. Miguel hands you the keys in person when you arrive in Lisbon. If you are already here, nothing changes except that you see the room yourself.
What does “bills included” cover?
The bills are in the rent, so you pay one amount each month, and weekly cleaning is included too. That is true of the rooms in the shared flats and of the whole apartments alike. Bills means water, electricity, gas and internet.
Are the rooms furnished?
Yes. Every room comes with a bed, wardrobe, desk and chair. Bed linen — sheets, pillow and duvet — is included at Av. do Brasil; at the other flats you bring your own. The whole apartments are let with a bed, a sofa and a fully equipped kitchen.
Is there a real contract?
Yes. You sign a written rental contract before you pay the deposit. It sets out the rent, the deposit, the start date and the minimum stay. You deal directly with Miguel, the owner. There is no agency in between.
Do I need a Portuguese guarantor?
No. You do not need a Portuguese guarantor (fiador).
Deposit — how much and when returned?
The deposit is one month of rent. You pay it by bank transfer after signing the contract, and it is returned within a week of you moving out.
Minimum stay?
Each room page shows its minimum stay. Right now it is 4 months for rooms and 12 months for whole apartments (T1 and T2).
Are couples allowed?
Only where you see “Couples welcome”: some en-suite rooms and the whole apartments. Those en-suite rooms add a monthly couples supplement, shown on the room page; the apartments do not. Every other room is for one person.
Can I see the room before deciding?
Always. If you are in Lisbon, agree a time with us and come see the room, the flat and the street. If you are not here yet, we can call you on WhatsApp video instead and walks you through the same thing, live, asking and answering as you go. It is never a recorded tour.
What is a “vila”?
A vila is a small cluster of houses built around a private courtyard, reached through a gate off the street — a Lisbon thing, from the nineteenth century, and still one of the quietest ways to live in the middle of the city. The Cruz da Carreira rooms and apartments are all in one. It means the ground-floor flats are not at street level: no traffic at the window, and nobody walks past your door who does not live there.
What is a “marquise”?
A marquise is a balcony closed in with glass, common in Lisbon flats. Most people use it for laundry and drying clothes. Some rooms here have a private one; it is listed under “Window” on the room page.
What is a “suite”? Is it the same as a private bathroom?
Yes — they are the same thing. A suite, or en-suite room, is a room with its own bathroom, used only by whoever rents that room. Portuguese listings call it a suite, or a room with casa de banho privada — also written casa de banho privativa, WC privado or WC privativo. In English it is an en-suite, or a room with a private bathroom. 9 of the rooms here are suites. The rest share a bathroom, and each room page says which it is and how many people share it.
How does the waiting list work?
Fill in the contact form or message us on WhatsApp. Pick the room you want, or “Any room / not sure”, and say when you arrive. When a room frees up, Miguel contacts the people on the list first. There is no fee.
